Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Surgical Technologist to join our team within our Labor and Delivery Department. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in preparing operating rooms, arranging surgical equipment, and supporting surgeons and nurses during procedures to ensure a safe and efficient environment. The Surgical Technologist plays a critical role in patient safety and surgical team efficiency by adhering to hospital protocols and maintaining certification and technical expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain sterile fields for a wide range of surgical procedures, including general, orthopedic, vascular, and specialty surgeries
- Set up surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies according to the procedure and surgeon preferences
- Assist the surgical team during procedures by passing instruments, sponges, and sterile supplies
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and maintain strict sterile technique at all times
- Ensure specimens are properly labeled and transported to pathology in accordance with facility protocols
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, circulating nurses, and other OR staff to ensure safe, efficient, and effective procedures
- Remain calm and communicate clearly during urgent or emergent surgical situations
- Verify that all instruments and equipment are sterilized, functional, and ready for use
- Troubleshoot and report equipment malfunctions promptly to minimize procedural delays
- Uphold ethical standards and advocate for patient safety, informed consent, and surgical site verification
- Accurately document case details, instrument counts, and supply usage in EMR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech, Paragon)
- Prepare and reset operating rooms efficiently for subsequent cases to maintain workflow
- Adhere to hospital safety guidelines, including infection control protocols and universal precautions
- Maintain required certifications and continuing education in surgical technology and operating room protocols
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program (CAAHEP or ABHES accredited)
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
- 1–2 years of recent OR surgical tech experience
- Familiarity with sterile processing, surgical instruments, and OR workflows.
- BLS certification (CPR AHA) – required
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
- Compassion and sensitivity to patients in labor and childbirth.
- Other certifications specific to the Unit
- Proficient with EMR systems (Epic, Meditech, Cerner, etc.)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Familiarity with medical terminology and best practices across all age groups
- Unit-specific certifications (as applicable)
