Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Surgical Technologist to join our team within our Labor and Delivery Department. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in preparing operating rooms, arranging surgical equipment, and supporting surgeons and nurses during procedures to ensure a safe and efficient environment. The Surgical Technologist plays a critical role in patient safety and surgical team efficiency by adhering to hospital protocols and maintaining certification and technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain sterile fields for cesarean sections and other obstetrical surgical procedures
  • Set up surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment according to procedure requirements and surgeon preferences
  • Assist the surgical team during cesarean sections and obstetrical procedures by passing instruments, sponges, and other sterile supplies
  • Anticipate surgeon’s needs during procedures and maintain sterile technique at all times
  • Ensure specimens are properly labeled and sent to pathology according to hospital protocols
  • Work collaboratively with obstetricians, anesthesia providers, L&D nurses, and neonatal teams to ensure safe and efficient care during surgical procedures
  • Communicate clearly and calmly during emergent situations.
  • Ensure surgical instruments and equipment are sterilized, functional, and ready for use
  • Troubleshoot and report equipment malfunctions promptly
  • Uphold ethical standards and advocate for patient rights, informed consent, and autonomy
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation using EMR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech, Paragon)
  • Prepare rooms efficiently for subsequent case
  • Follow all hospital safety policies, including universal precautions and sterile processing protocols
  • Assist with documenting supplies used during procedures according to facility requirements
  • Maintain required certifications and competencies in surgical technology and labor & delivery practices
  • Stay current with best practices for obstetrical surgery and patient safety initiatives

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program (CAAHEP or ABHES accredited)
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • 1–2 years of recent labor & delivery or obstetrics surgical tech experience
  • Experience assisting with cesarean sections and emergency obstetric procedures
  • Familiarity with sterile processing, obstetrical surgical instruments, and labor & delivery workflows.
  • BLS certification (CPR AHA) – required
  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Compassion and sensitivity to patients in labor and childbirth.
  • Other certifications specific to the Unit
  • Proficient with EMR systems (Epic, Meditech, Cerner, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and best practices across all age groups
  • Unit-specific certifications (as applicable)
